Assignment #3: Lost Love

The song written and sung by Tom Paxton tells a common story:

1/ What is the story...what has happened?
2/ What emotions does he feel
3/ Is this an example of lost passionate love, lost companionate love, or both?
4/ Does the song and words convey the sense of loss to you?

Post responses online. Due Friday.

  1. I think that basically what happened in this song was that him and significant other split apart from one another. He is feeling sad and lost for words. I would describe this song as both lost passionate love and lost compassionate love. Overall, the words did convey the since of lost. In his chorus, he said things like "As I lie in my bed in the mornin',Without you, without you," or "Please don't go, please don't go."

  2. His love (woman) is leaving him, suddenly and he doesn’t want her to leave, she's leaving without saying goodbye, and never coming back. He is deeply saddened and hurt, maybe even depressed; and doesn’t want her to leave. I think this is more so compassionate love, because he just wants to love her and be sure she's happy. Yes it does because over and over he's stating how he doesn’t want her to go, and he's lying in bed all alone, the mood to me reads lonely.

  8. I think that in this song he feels sad and kind of guilty..as he kept saying i could of loved you better, hurting was the last thing on my mind. his significant other was either unhappy and he feels maybe he could of done somthing better or diffrent.i think it is a example of lost passionate love becase he has lost someone who deeply cared about and very willing to change if they were to come back. this song is not convey much loss to me.

  9. the story is about how this mans wife is now leaving him or moving apart from him and how he never has realized it untill not that she has left. He feels regret and depression because he constantly repeats the words "Last thing on my mind" meaning that no matter what was happening, he never thought or realized that their love was growing apart. this is both lost passionate and lost compasionate because he wants everything to get better and also there is a sense of loss or regret in his words. the song conveys loss to me but also regret and rethiking because how he says he thought he never saw it coming meaning their relationship was very hilly but he never thought their love would split

  10. Tom Paxton is singing about losing the love of his life. To me, the words seem to hint that he could have treated her better, or he pushed her away. He sings about "the weeds slowly growing".. maybe this means they have grown apart or the emotional distance between them has increased. He sings of being sad and lonely, wishing that she would come back to him. The song conveys a strong message of lost love when i listen to it, i would have to say that it is an example of both lost passionate love and lost companionate love. He repeats that being unkind and losing her was the last thing on his mind, he seems to wish that it never happened and would have never predicted it to end up this way.

  11. His lover has left him without explanation and without a fair goodbye. He is sad and missing her dearly. He wakes up each morning without her beside him. He doesn't know what happened or why she left so he has begun to think that it was something that he possibly did wrong. He says that he didn't mean to be unkind and could have loved her better. That being unkind was "the last thing on his mind." He doesn't want her to go, she's leaving without a trace, as if she were never there. His emotions in this song are very strong. It's an emotion of lost love and the heartbreak that it brings. It is a loss of both passionate love and companionate love. And I definitely feel this sense of loss that he is trying to get across. You can hear the sadness, not only in his words, but in the expression of those words.

  13. The singers lover left her without saying anything or even saying goodbye. He does not even kno why she left him at all and keeps thinking in his head that its his fault that she left. He never thought that she would leave him like this.

  15. This story is about a relationship has gone bad, the woman leaves the man without any explanation. He does assume all respondsibility for the part that he played in the situation. I also detected emotions of sadness, hurt, and grief. It does appear that this was a case of loss passionate and loss of companionated love. The song does convey a great sense of loss.

  16. The women left and he acknowledges that she left and that she left and it was his fault ie. "the weeds were growin". He also says that it was his fault he should have known but it was the last thing on his mind. He says that he could have loved her better. The significant other has left and he is left wondering exactly why thinking that he didn't show her enough attention.

He feels remorse, loss and responsibility. I beleive he feels both types of loss compassionate and passionate because he wants to be with her and he misses not waking up with her.

Yes this song shows relational loss to me because he wants to know where she's going and why she is leaving with out word.
